Fifth to Sixth Grade Course Placements

Grade 6 Math, Science, and English course placement recommendations will be emailed by March 29.

As noted in the informational videos, teachers and administrators regularly monitor student progress to ensure they are placed correctly. There are many opportunities for advanced or accelerated courses in Grades 7, 8, and 9. It is often best to focus on the transition to middle school before seeking advanced placement. Course adjustments can be made throughout the school year based on student needs, and parents play an important role in these decisions. The district’s middle school philosophy ensures parents are notified early and often when schedule or course changes are recommended.

Greenwich Public Schools offers summer math bridge courses to help students strengthen key skills. These courses focus on the most essential topics, and students must pass the final exam with a score of 85% or higher to advance. Registration for the summer school course will be available in April. More information is posted on the summer school website. For families unable to participate in summer school, students can take a “Prove to Move” exam instead. These exams will be given at the Board of Education Building on June 25, July 23, and August 13. Students must register to take the appropriate math tests via the Google Form at least 72 hours before the test date.

Middle School Counselors, Middle School Principals, and Curriculum Coordinators have created an informational video about what goes on in the spring and summer to help prepare students for middle school. This series of 3-minute informational videos detail the social, emotional, and academic shifts at the middle school and describes the differences in course offerings and supports available.
