Dear Parents and Families of North Mianus School,
Welcome to North Mianus School. It is the mission of the Greenwich Public Schools to educate all students to the highest levels of academic achievement, to enable them to reach and expand their potential and to prepare them to become productive, responsible, ethical, creative and compassionate members of society. At North Mianus we are committed to the district norms in our school community: Be Here, Be Safe, Be Honest, Care for Self and Others and Let Go and Move On. These norms are our mantra and they permeate every aspect of the school culture.
In addition, we have embraced the District’s Strategic Plan by incorporating academic, personal and interpersonal capacities as exemplified in the Vision of the Graduate.
Our school continues our journey towards a Personalized Learning Environment as we rethink time and space and work diligently to provide our students with both choice and voice using our district’s standards based curriculum.
North Mianus reflects the rich fabric of our diversity. Every year we welcome students from all over the globe. Our international students bring with them a window into the world as we learn that we have more commonalities than differences.
North Mianus is a high achieving school, which has frequently been recognized by the State of Connecticut as a School of Excellence. Our focus this past year has been on student goal setting and teacher/student feedback and collaboration. Last year all students set academic and behavioral goals and shared them with their parents through at home conferences. Fifth graders were invited to Parent Conferences this winter and personally shared their work in partnership with teachers and parents. This was a very successful initiative we hope to continue this year. By sharing goals and aspirations with parents, students gain ownership of their progress and greater motivation to succeed. We continue to integrate technology into daily instruction as students learn how to use resources to make informed choices about their learning and to pursue passions. We will also continue to incorporate project based learning opportunities that showcase what students know and are able to do. We also look forward to our continued efforts to provide a more personalized learning environment in which students become partners, along with their teacher and peers in their learning. We will be sharing our ongoing work at PTA meetings as well as Ask the Principal sessions throughout the year.
We recognize the importance of the partnership between home and school and we value our parent volunteers and room mothers, who organize class activities, stuff Friday folders, accompany classes on field trips, serve as guest readers and support our school events. The PTA is an integral part of our school culture and we are grateful for the amazing support we receive.
I hope you will take the time to view our website as your comments and suggestions are very important to us. You will find updated information on academics, school events and PTA functions as well as links to district information. In short, you will be able to access a wealth of information on the site.
Sarah Obuchowski, our Assistant Principal and myself wish you a wonderful school year.
