Senior Options Program

Senior Options: General Information 

Seniors in good academic standing have the opportunity to participate in a Senior Option, i.e. Internship or Project, in the last 4+ weeks of senior year instead of attending classes at GHS. 

The start and end date for Senior Options is officially announced after the BOE sets a date for graduation in April.  Typically, Senior Options begins after AP testing and ends on the second to last day of school.      

Prerequisites for participation: 

  • Have and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Have satisfactory attendance and disciplinary records
  • Have not failed or be in danger of failing any senior year course (this includes PE)
  • Have successfully completed all graduation requirements, including performance standards

Senior Options 2022: Details

  • Program participation requires 25 hours of work per week (5 hours/day); time lost because of illness or college orientations must be made up 
  • Program begins Monday, May 16th (last day of classes for participants is Friday, May 13th)
  • Program ends Monday, June 20th (approximate - official final day announced after April 1st when the BOE selects graduation date)
  • All seniors must choose between a self-designed Senior Internship, a self-designed Senior Project, or remaining in class.
  • All students must register on the Senior Options website starting January 12th
  • Students will more information about the Senior Options program through an introductory presentation  in homeroom on January 12th.  will focus on how to register in the Senior Options website.  
  • Students are also required to attend a mandatory information session one afternoon during Exam week to get more information about senior project or internship.  More information will be forthcoming.
  • Students wishing to participate in Internship or Project must submit a self-design proposal to the Senior Options website by March 15th
  • Students will be notified of approval status through the Senior Options website.   
  • All students are required to have a GHS faculty mentor for support and supervision for both internship and project. 
  • PTA volunteers are available in the Career Center during the lunch block to help you register, brainstorm ideas, and connect with potential internship/community service sites starting on January 25th.

Self-design Internship:

  • Register on the Senior Options website starting January 12th.  
  • Develop an internship proposal.
    • All senior internships are self-designed (find your own) in that students must contact sites directly. Once a site agrees to take you as an intern, you upload the proposal to the Senior Options website. 
    • Ms. Lochridge and PTA Volunteers in the College & Career Center will support you in identifying and contacting internship sites.  
  • Submit an internship proposal to the Senior Options website by March 15th
  • Students must have an adult Site Supervisor who cannot be your parent/guardian
  • Students cannot be paid for their time (internships must be unpaid)
  • Enter weekly log of hours in SOP website during program
  • Submit weekly reflections in SOP website during program

    For students interested in interning at a GPS Elementary or Middle School:

    • Email the teacher that you would like to intern with and cc the school principal
    • Once approved by the teacher and principal, add the position to the SOP site 

Required Information Sessions

Each student interested in participating in Senior Internship must attend one of the following information sessions. 

  • January 24 - 1:30-2:00
  • January 25 - 1:30-2:00
  • January 26 - 1:30-2:00
  • January 27 - 1:30-2:00

Self-design Project:

  • Register on the Senior Options website starting January 12th.  
  • All projects are to be completed independently - no partner/group projects will be approved
  • Projects must fall under one of the following three categories:
  • Develop a Senior Project Proposal. 
  • All Senior Projects must be overseen by a GHS faculty member.  Your Senior Project Proposal must be approved by your GHS Faculty Mentor before uploading to the SOP website.  
  • Submit your Senior Project Proposal to the Senior Options website by March 15th 
  • Enter weekly log of hours in SOP website during program
  • Submit weekly reflections in SOP website during program
  • Present your project at the Senior Project Exhibition in the Student Center
    • Date TBD - on or about June 20th
    • Presentation format can be oral, video, website, slide presentation
