Green Initiative

The Green Committee encourages Riverside students to participate in national events such as Walk to School Day and America Recycles Day.

Recycling
Riverside School participates in Greenwich's single stream recycling program. This year we will introduce our Riverside Recyclers program which allows students to take active leadership roles in encouraging their peers to properly sort recycling, trash and compost in the newly designed cafeteria. We hope these lessons and action continue at home as well.

Composting
Compost bins were installed outside the school in November, 2015. Our students learn about composting through presentations in the cafetaria and food sorting. Parent workshops were also introduced to teach about reducing food waste and how to start and maintain a home compost.

School Garden
Come check out our school garden! Over the summer, volunteers are needed to maintain the garden. Shifts are one week long and you can take home any vegetables that are ripe!

Battery Recycling
Teachers and parents are encouraged to drop off their used batteries in the collection box at the entrance of the school. The Green Committee collects and recycles them at the Holly Hill Recycling facility in Greenwich.

Crayola Colorcycle Program
Riverside introduced Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing program devised to turn used markers into energy!  All around Riverside students and teachers will be collecting used markers that are ready to be discarded. The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel.

Earth Day Celebration
Join us in April 2019 for our annual outdoor celebration of the Earth! Each year the Town of Greenwich Conservation Commission partners with us to create fun, hands-on learning activities that teach students to love and protect our planet. There is a different focus for each day of the week to encourage students to explore the ways they can incorporate being green into their daily lives and make everyday Earth Day - walking to school, reducing waste, recycling and more.

Parent Programming
The Green Committee has a number of opportunities to parents as well - these range from environmental speakers to outings to local farms and more. They are open to parents who wants to learn more about living a greener and more sustainable lifestyle.
