Green Schools & Composting

EMS participates in a variety of activities to keep our school green and are students and families informed. In addition to recycling, Earth day, leaf recycling, and the used crayon collection drive, EMS was one of the first schools in the district to successfully launch a school-wide composting program.

EMS strives to teach students the importance of recycling items, like plastic bottles and snack bags, and composting their fruit and vegetable scraps by separating them into specific bins during lunchtime. Each day, students collected about 30 pounds of compostable material in the cafeterias, with a monthly average of 600 pounds. By separating food scraps and not putting them into the trash, students are reducing the amount of waste going into landfills while providing material necessary to create compost, which will return valuable nutrients back into the soil.
