Greenwich Public Schools engaged MP Planning Group to complete a comprehensive study of space utilization across all 11 elementary schools. The report examines how well current classroom space aligns with enrollment, both today and over the next ten years, and identifies where buildings are over- or under-capacity.
Why this matters: As Greenwich's elementary enrollment shifts over the coming decade, some schools may face crowding while others have room to spare. This study gives the Board of Education and community a clear, consistent way to understand those pressures — using a standardized "Planning Capacity" methodology based on class-size policy and typical school operations — so that facility and staffing decisions are grounded in data rather than guesswork.
What the report found:
- Districtwide, elementary schools are projected to run at high utilization over the next five years (96% on average, peaking at 98%), meaning there isn't excess space to consolidate schools.
- Utilization varies significantly by building: Glenville, North Mianus, North Street, Old Greenwich, and Riverside are projected to exceed full planning capacity, while Hamilton Avenue, Julian Curtiss, and Parkway have more available space.
