New Lebanon School Set to Open After Winter Recess

New Lebanon School (NLS) students will enjoy their first day in their new building on February 20, 2019. After a celebratory assembly with NLS staff and families, students will head to their new classrooms.

New Lebanon School is an intra-district elementary International Baccalaureate magnet school that serves students in grades PreK-5. The new building was designed to accommodate a population in the NLS attendance area that had grown beyond the capacity of the school, as well as to provide for preschool classes and magnet seats as part of the District racial balance plan.

New Lebanon School will be providing two opportunities for the community to visit the new building and learn more about the NLS magnet program:

Community Open House - February 23, 10am

New Lebanon School welcomes the entire Greenwich community to hear about the features of Greenwich's first next generation school and tour the building on Saturday, February 23, 2019 from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Join our elected officials, members of the NLS Building Committee, District and school administration and members of the community as we celebrate the opening of Greenwich's first next generation school.

Magnet Program Open House - February 23, 1pm

New Lebanon magnet school is accepting applications for the 2019-2020 school year. Tour the new state-of-the-art facility, learn more about the accredited International Baccalaureate program and meet the welcoming and diverse community on Saturday, February 23, 2019 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.

About New Lebanon School's new building:

Located atop sloping banks and bordered by natural habitat wetlands this elementary school serves 374 students in grades PreK-5 with an International Baccalaureate (IB) program. The Town's goal is to attract an intra-district magnet school population interested in the research and evidence based IB learning model. TSKP STUDIO's design is based on a respect for the natural environment and a belief in its ability to shape the learning experience and contribute to the IB learning model. In keeping with granite boulders protruding around the site, the building is clad in stone-colored ground face cast stone and natural zinc metal panels. The walls of the two-story school is located along the steep slope with building walls contoured to follow the sinuous curves of the sloping banks. A pedestrian bridge brings students into the building at the main level where activity in the cafeteria, learning commons, and gymnasium can be observed.

The centrally located learning commons equipped with flexible furnishings and adaptable technological infrastructure allows for multiple zones of learning happening simultaneously. There is a large group instruction area, with seating for 60 students, small group collaborative areas, independent study areas, and an innovation maker space with green screen, and Lego wall, and a small tiered "read aloud" story corner. The gymnatorium, which features a traverse-style climbing wall and ADA accessible stage, is sized to seat the entire student body, faculty, and staff.

Sustainable Features include: Photo-voltaic array consisting of seventy-two 200W panels mounted to the roof of the building; rapidly renewable materials: linoleum flooring, wall covering, tackable surfaces; compact building footprint; and high performance thermal envelope/glazing with low-E coatings.

The new building is designed to meet the sustainability goals established by the Building Committee. The plan is to achieve a gold-level LEED rating from US Green Building Council. Some of the sustainability goals include: a 20% reduction in water consumption; the elimination of CFC-based refrigerants; better acoustics throughout the building; using only low VOC materials; using construction material with recycled content; reducing pollution impact from construction activities; reducing heat islands; using very efficient HVAC systems; monitoring energy use after occupancy; and using wood products only from forests that are managed in an environmentally responsible manner.

The new school contains 21 general classrooms, 4 dedicated classrooms for art, music, and science, a new media center, gymnasium, cafeteria, and other support spaces for children, teachers, and school administration.
