Last Monday, November 4, 2019, 236 members of Greenwich High School's Class of 2020 were inducted into the National Honor Society, an honor bestowed upon individuals for academic performance, leadership, service and character.
"This ceremony was a celebration of these students who have given so much of their time, energy and efforts to our school and local communities. We are proud of their accomplishments and grateful for their service," said Superintendent, Dr. Toni Jones, who shared remarks with the inductees during their ceremony.
This year's 236 inductees completed a combined 15,000 hours of community service in advance of submitting their packets for membership consideration. This group of students will then complete another 12,744 hours of service during their senior year as part of the NHS requirement for membership. They are serving as peer tutors, helping in classrooms and learning centers, working as technical assistants in the GHS media center and 80 members are serving in the greater community with organizations such as Greenwich Emergency Medical Services (GEMS), Abilis, Greenwich Hospital, Neighbor-to-Neighbor and more.
"These students are clearly making a difference in their school and community," said English as a Second Language (ESL) Learning Center Aide, Ms. Jennifer Boone, "Zoe Harris, one of our ESL NHS tutors, is simply amazing with our beginning language learners in the ESL Learning Center. Zoe can speak Spanish, and therefore is extremely helpful with students who have recently arrived from Guatemala and Honduras who only speak Spanish."
About the National Honor SocietyThe purpose of the National Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. As new members of NHS, seniors at GHS contribute their time and talent as Peer Tutors in the school programs, providing a vital service to their school community. Local National Honor Society chapters are charged with creating a selection process that conforms to the national guidelines, is applied fairly and consistently to all candidates, and provides a meaningful recognition of deserving students. All completed packets for membership are reviewed by the Faculty Council and membership is offered based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service.
