- Marie Shimchick
- Ms. Shimchick is thrilled to be part of the GHS Theater staff, teaching sections of Comedy Improv in addition to her duties as Reading/Literacy Specialist for grades 10 and 11 and basic music theory/sightsinging in a class called “Musicianship”. Presently, she is the advisor to the Downhill Demons Ski Club and Varsity Girls Golf coach at GHS which last year finished 3rd in CT and 4th in the FCIAC’s (Go Lady Cards!).
Presently in her fourth year at GHS, this is Ms. Shimchick’s 22nd year overall with the Greenwich Public Schools. For four years, she was the general/vocal music teacher at New Lebanon Elementary School as well as Western, Central and Eastern Jr. High Schools. Since 1990, she taught both general/vocal music and reading at Eastern Middle School and for 16 years was the creator and director of the EMS Annual Madrigal Feaste, an authentic Renaissance dinner which utilized the talents of over 150 students and 35 staff members. In addition, Ms. Shimchick conducted the Eastmen, an award winning boys’ vocal ensemble, the 7th Grade Chorus, was Stage Manager and Lighting Director for all theatrical productions as well as the softball coach for at least a million years.
Ms. Shimchick holds a Bachelor of Music degree (music education, vocal emphasis) Magna cum laude from Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY and a Master in Education (Reading) Degree from the University of Hartford. She also has a 6th Year Certificate combining coursework in Music, Theater and Language Arts. She is listed in editions of Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in American Education and is the 1999 Phi Delta Kappa (Fordham Chapter) Teacher of the Year Award. Professional memberships include Organization of American Kodaly Educators, Music Educators National Conference, American Choral Directors Association, National Council of Teachers of English, International Reading Association, USGA and is a Level II Certified Golf Instructor (USGTF).
Favorite acting roles include Nettie Fowler in Carousel, Ado Annie in Oklahoma, Mother Abbess in Sound of Music, Bloody Mary in South Pacific and Meg Brockie in Brigadoon. She has studied Comedy Improv in various venues and loves a good (well, bad) pun. Vocally, she has performed over the years with the Greenwich Choral Society and Westport Madrigal Singers. One of the accomplishments she is most proud of is finally lowering her golf handicap to single digits and presently holds a 9.5 USGA Index.
