Magic Circle is presented by G.H.S. Theater Arts and G.H.S. Thespian Troupe. Debuting in the spring of 1993, it consists entirely of student written scenes, monologues, and plays performed in a series of evening productions, followed by a series of in-school assemblies showcasing the work. The production de-emphasizes the plastic elements of theater and focus on acting and writing. Magic Circle is an activity open to anyone interested in acting, directing, or writing, as well as anyone who wants to develop as a theater generalist.
Magic Circle originated as a special kind of theatrical opportunity to students: a showcase for their creative energies amid the unusual co-operative challenges of theater. The focus of Magic Circle is the process of theatrical invention, from its origins as word or image, through the organized and developmental interactions of writer, director, and actor, to the end point in one of a variety of presentations. The showcase is open to any student who has work to present. Authors seek out students to direct and act in their piece. Work is completed on a continuum, and some projects that may only be readings this year may be performances next year. During the year we offer a variety of workshops and programs to assist students in the development of their work. As far as we know, no other high school theater program develops and features original student work in a prolific festival such as this. This is a long standing tradition that began in the spring of 1993 which has grown from twelve pieces the first year, to twenty-two two years ago, to forty-four and and once as high as ninety-five during the intervening years, until we capped the number at the current level of forty-four to make sure that every piece gets adequate attention and development. In addition, the Advanced Theater Seminar class has taken over a larger role in developing and refining student writing for this purpose. These new steps continue to keep Magic Circle at the forefront of educational theater work.

Choosing to write for theater is possibly one of the most exciting undertakings in which you can be involved. Like all other writing, it represents a concentration and focus of one's own ideas and feelings into an intense form. Like other forms of writing, it results from an ongoing process of invention, experimentation, exploration, and revision. Unlike all other forms of writing, the interaction with others - first, the actors and ultimately the audience - occurs where you can observe it, making the excitement and rewards for your efforts particularly keen. A substantial portion of the development process of theater writing occurs while interacting with the directors and actors using your material. Creative growth is increased enormously in this setting because it is much easier to assess the very life of the material. If you want to give it a try, you're probably ready to. Unlike shows that require auditions, it is Magic Circle's goal to involve as many students as possible. Students can become involved by connecting with others with whom they wish to work or by writing independently; they pursue the development of the project by meeting all applicable deadlines. Students have the opportunity, and responsibility, for creating their own performance opportunities.
