The annual Law Day Essay Contest is sponsored by Attorney General Richard Blumenthal. Students in grade 8 across the state of Connecticut are invited to participate in this contest by writing an essay on a selected current event topic. This year's topic was: Should seatbelts be required on school buses? Of the 603 students who entered essays in the contest, only 10 were selected as winners. Two of these winners are Western Middle School students. Attorney General Blumenthal came to our school on Friday, June 25 to present these students with awards. The students who were recognized are:
SARAH ZYGMONT, First Place Winner
NICOLE POWERS, Honorable Mention
CONGRATULATIONS to both of these students!

For a second time,
Mrs. Carmen Vergara has donated
her professional time to beautify the halls of Western Middle School. She has created a huge, beautiful
painting of the "Mona
Lisa" by Leonardo Da Vinci, in the art wing hallway. Last year Mrs.
Vergara re-created Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night" on a nearby
door. Students in art classes
helped her with preliminary preparation for the work. When she was finished, art students were awestruck at her
work.
Mrs Vergara is a very talented
professional muralist and decorative painter. Her amazing paintings grace the
walls of corporations, restaurants, and private homes in our area and New York
City. Stop in to see Mrs. Vergara's wonderful work is located in the E-wing at
Western. She can be reached at carmenvergara.com

In order to ensure all of our students’ safety, please follow the traffic patterns for student arrival and dismissal. The drop off/pick-up area for children is in the circle near the gym. This door is always open on inclement days throughout the school year. It will also open on a daily basis from 7:15-7:45 a.m. during the months of December through March. Children are NOT to be dropped off or picked up on Western Junior Highway. In addition, please be sure to observe all traffic signs and designated crosswalks. Thank you for your help with this important issue.
