Glenville School Literacy Department

The Glenville literacy department consists of three Literacy Specialists, Carole Marotto, Rose Chodos and Katie Ferguson.  What do these specialists do?

The primary goal of the literacy department is to train teachers in effective practices of Readers' and Writers' Workshop.   They also analyze student performance and provide support and enrichment when necessary.

You may see them doing any of the following:

  • Consulting with teachers and administration

  • Planning staff development sessions

  • Modeling a lesson for a classroom teacher

  • Co-teaching a lesson with a classroom teacher

  • Collaborating and planning with classroom teachers

  • Instructing small groups of children

  • Working individually with a child

  • Organizing school-wide events to promote literacy

The Literacy Specialists use many different methods and materials to inspire and instruct students in mastering skills and strategies related to decoding and comprehension.

They have been trained in the following methods:

  • Balanced Literacy

  • Project Read

  • Readers' Workshop

  • Writers' Workshop

  • Focus on Phonics

  • Junior Great Books

  • Literature Circles

Standardized tests have become an increasing importance in our nation and Literacy Specialists help guide teachers in effectively preparing students to perform at their optimum levels.
