2012 Summer Reading!
The Middle School Summer Reading program is designed to help students enjoy reading for pleasure. Incoming 6th, 7th and 8th grade students should refer to the Middle School Summer Reading website for a wide selection of recommended titles and further information. In addition, all middle school students are required to read and take notes on two books of their choice. Go to the Summer Reading Assignment website to download the graphic organizer.
Graduating 8th Graders moving on to GHS in Fall, should refer to the GHS Summer Reading website for reading suggestions and to download the GHS summer reading pamphlet and assignment information.

Poem in Your Pocket Day!
April is National Poetry Month and to celebrate Eastern will be participating in National POEM IN YOUR POCKET DAY, tomorrow, April 26th. The idea is simple: write an original poem, put it in your pocket, and share it with as many of your friends, classmates, and teachers as you can. At the end of the day your poems will be collected as you leave school by members of the Literary Circle and, who knows, maybe it will be published in Fingerprints, our school's literary magazine. Get writing people!

Wordmasters Word Lists are Available
What is Wordmasters? The Wordmasters Challenge is a national analogies-solving contest open to all Eastern Middle School students. Participation in all three competitions builds vocabulary and encourages higher-level verbal reasoning abilities. The yearlong schedule, study templates, and wordlists for each grade are available in the Main Office, in the floor-standing revolving documents rack. EMS Raises $2,071.50 Plus Pajamas!
Thank You to All Who Participated in Pajama Day on Friday, 3/30!
On Friday, March 30th, EMS students raised $2071.50 and donated 50 pajama "items" (36 full sets and 14 bottoms, nightgowns, etc) to the Pajama Program. The Pajama Program is a non-profit organization that provides new, warm pajamas and new books to children in need in the United States. This fundraiser was sponsored by the SCA and Service for Others Committee.

The start of Spring Competitive Sports tryouts is March 26th.
You are eligible to try out if: 1) A current sports physical is on file with the nurse (the physical is considered current for 13 months from the date it was issued) and 2) and a completed Blue Permission form is on file in the main office with Mrs. Gittens. The Student Council and Service for Others committee will be sponsoring a "Pajama Drive" tomorrow, Friday, March 30th. This drive will benefit the "Pajama Program," a non-profit organization that provides new, warm, pajamas to children in need. We are asking that students bring in a new pair of pajamas for a teen or kid to school on March 30th OR donate $5.00 towards the purchase of a pair of pajamas. Student/Faculty Basketball Game!
The Student /Faculty basketball game will be held TODAY, Thursday, Feb. 23rd and will start at 3:00pm after school until the late bus. This event is a fun season wrap up for our Basketball A teams (8th graders). Tickets will be sold each morning in the gym. The ticket price is $5.00 (for players and spectators) and all proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association, to help support research and educational programs that promote Heart Healthy Lifestyles and Activities.

Eastern Middle School will again work with WORLDSTRIDES, a nationally recognized tour company, to provide your child with a wonderful opportunity. The trip is scheduled for May 1-4, 2012. All materials needed to register will be distributed to 8th graders in Advisor Base on Monday, September 12. Please be sure to ask your child for the packet and read its contents carefully. All are encouraged to opt for the Full Refund Program. The tour price of $815 will be in effect until October 31, 2011.

The "Black and White" Dance is TONIGHT!
The 7th Grade "Black and White" Dance is tonight, (Friday, 11/4) from 7:30-9:00 pm. Tickets are $5.00 each and will be on sale outside the cafeteria during 7th grade lunches all week. If you buy your tickets in advance, you get two raffle tickets and double your chances of winning a great prize! Tickets will also be available tonight night at the door. Mr. Knop is going to DJ, and we will have great prizes and munchies. So dress in your favorite Black and White outfit and don't miss the dance on Friday night!

New Lockers Have Arrived at Eastern Middle School!
The removal and replacement of student lockers for Eastern Middle School will begin on Monday 10/3. The replacement of lockers will occur bank by bank, in an orderly fashion. As each advisor base is affected, we will notify the Advisor Base teachers, who will work with your sons and daughters to clean out their lockers and to organize themselves for the two to three days it will take to once again have a secure location for their belongings.
During the time frame that your child's belongings are not able to be stored in a locked locker, please, as much as possible, have your sons and daughters leave their valuables at home.

Authors are sorted by reading level, genre, and are also listed alphabetically, and there are plenty of suggestions on the Recommended Books page for those needing more help!

Due to a water main break on Hendrie Avenue in front of the school, we have no water service. We will follow an Early Release schedule, with dismissal at 12:35 pm and we will have regular bus service.
Eighth graders will not have lunch at school today.
